AS SOMEONE WHO, until recently, was making good use of a retro iPhone 8 that by now can probably be classed as vintage, you might not think that I’m the best person to review Apple’s latest innovations. To the contrary, the unorthodox perspective of someone who was pressing a home button just a few short weeks ago is precisely what is needed for you to grasp the tremendous leaps Apple’s technology has taken.

With every new Apple release, the first question on everyone’s lips is ‘how is this any better than the previous generation of the model?’ Admittedly, there is quite a significant difference between the iPhone 8 and the iPhone 16 Pro and Pro Max that I’ve been testing over the last few weeks, so perhaps the changes are more pronounced in my case. But there’s plenty of new features that even a person that upgrades their iPhone on a yearly basis will notice.

Of course, this is only the start. Just this week, Apple Intelligence – Apple’s own artificial intelligence software – became available, and while I was already impressed with the range beforehand, the upgrades are staggering. These are my honest thoughts on the next generation of Apple tech.

iPhone

Display

For starters, the display of the 16 Pro has been expanded to – fittingly – 16 centimetres. This is despite the fact that the phone itself is no bigger than the 15 Pro. It achieves this increased display size through improved mechanical architecture and thinner borders, and the result begs the question of whether the iPhone will ever reach a peak, or if Apple will simply continue to find new ways to improve it. We’d bank on the latter.

The 16 Pro Max adopts the same design philosophy, except it’s even bigger at 17.5 centimetres. Both models have titanium frames that are stronger and lighter than ever, along with ceramic shield glass that Apple claims is twice as tough as traditional smartphone glass. All of this helps showcase the most immersive screens on any iPhone to date. The Super Retina XDR display supports ProMotion technology, bringing a seamless visual experience with always-on capabilities – and yes, that mean the screen never actually turns off, it just dims when you’re not using it.

iPhone 16 Pro Max

Battery

The battery life of the 16 Pro and 16 Pro Max is another standout. Jumping from a rapidly aging iPhone 8 to the 16’s long-lasting performance almost felt like whiplash, with the ability to outlast more than an entire day’s use on a full charge – some reports put the battery life at an astounding 18 hours, compared to 14 hours for the 15 Pro.

According to Apple, the 16 Pro and Pro Max have the longest battery lives of any iPhone, and I was the beneficiary of this advancement on more than one occasion. One day I simply left my charger at work. Rather than panic or borrow someone else’s charger, I figured the situation could be a testing opportunity. With my phone on just over 50% charge at 6pm, I spent the evening and following morning proceeding as usual: browsing social media, making a few calls and streaming some shows. The next day I returned to work and the comfort of my charger, and the 16 Pro had only dropped to 30% charge by 9am. Impressive.

Camera, Siri and processor

As for the camera, the iPhone 16 Pro lineup’s new 48MP Fusion camera and 5x telephoto lens work wonders for both amateur and seasoned photographers. Featuring a faster quad-pixel sensor, the 16 Pro is capable of capturing video in 4K at 120 fps with Dolby Vision support, a first not only for iPhones, but for all smartphones.

Siri has also levelled up, with better language understanding and a new on-screen interface. The voice assistant is now capable of handling in-app requests across different apps, with context retention and improved flexibility, which make it easier than ever to get Siri’s help.

Apple’s A18 Pro chip, built on 3-nanometer technology, is the heart of the iPhone 16 Pro and Pro Max. Its upgraded 6-core GPU, with hardware-accelerated ray tracing, brings console-level visuals to mobile gaming and other apps. Gaming enthusiasts will especially appreciate Game Mode, which smooths out frame rates and reduces latency for AirPods and controllers, perfect for immersive, high-intensity gameplay.

Apple Intelligence

Now we arrive at the highlight. Central to the new iPhone 16 Pro models is Apple Intelligence, a suite of generative AI tools designed to simplify and enhance everyday tasks. Powered by the A18 Pro chip’s neural engine, Apple Intelligence uses both on-device processing and private Cloud information to deliver faster contextual assistance without compromising user privacy.

In practice, this means the iPhone can understand, summarise and help manage notifications, emails and other communications based on context. In-app, AI-powered writing tools can also help users write emails, check grammar and even summarise content in a desired tone, like friendly or professional. Apple Intelligence’s integration with the iPhone’s camera lets users access information instantly by simply holding the camera over objects. For instance, snapping a photo of a flyer enables you to add the event to your calendar. Lastly, if you’ve ever spent an unreasonable amount of time searching for a specific photo in your camera roll, the solution has arrived. Now you can simply describe the photo you’re looking for, like ‘me at the gym in a red shirt’, and Apple Intelligence will find it. The emphasis here is on practical uses, rather than needless features.

The verdict

The iPhone 16 Pro and Pro Max redefine what smartphones can do, pushing boundaries in design, performance and user experience. With a stunning camera system, sophisticated AI capabilities and professional-grade performance in a sleek yet durable frame, these models represent the pinnacle of Apple’s engineering prowess. It goes without saying that it’s worthwhile upgrading from the iPhone 8, if there is anyone else that still has one, but the 16 Pro and Pro Max far surpass even the more recent models. This is the biggest leap the iPhone has taken in years.

The post Tried & tested: Samsung Galaxy Watch Ultra appeared first on Men's Health Magazine Australia.

]]>
WATCHES HAVE ALWAYS been the go-to companion for an adventurer, explorer or someone simply looking to get a little exercise in while staying aware of the time. But in the same way the style, scale and format of our adventures has changed in modern times, so too, have our watches. They’ve become more effective, more stylish, more advanced and most importantly, more intelligent – as the producers of these watches will waste no time in telling you. But if you’re looking for the superlative sum of all these parts, Samsung’s new Galaxy Watch Ultra is a class above the rest.

The Galaxy Watch Ultra takes everything from the standard Galaxy Watch and elevates it. In comparison to the Galaxy Watch7, the Galaxy Watch Ultra has a larger battery capacity, a bigger screen, more features and a few extra buttons, for good measure. Those aren’t the only improvements though. The Galaxy Watch Ultra also has an enhanced BioActive sensor, personalised fitness coaching and an emergency siren[1] in case you get into trouble. Perhaps most intriguingly, it also harnesses the power of Galaxy AI[2] for personalised insights on fitness and health[3].

Clearly, the Galaxy Watch Ultra isn’t short on features, but can it hold up to the rigorous testing of the Men’s Health team? Read on to find out.

Galaxy Watch Ultra

The look

We love a watch that stands out, and the Galaxy Watch Ultra certainly fits that bill. The watch comes in three titanium colours – titanium grey, titanium silver and titanium white – all of which command attention. As for the band, a bright orange ‘Marine’ band is the default, but there are other options. ‘Trail’ and ‘PeakForm’ band varieties are also available, and in addition to orange, they also come in more subtle white, green and dark grey colours. Personally, we can’t look past the orange base.[4]

As for the dial, the Galaxy Watch Ultra opts for a distinct shape. While previous Samsung watches have been mostly circular – the Galaxy Watch Ultra is more of a half circle, half square. The case itself is a square with rounded corners, while the 47mm screen remains circular.

On either the left or right side of the watch – depending on which way you choose to wear it – you’ll find three buttons. There’s the usual back and home keys, and a quick button. As the Galaxy Watch Ultra was built with physical activity in mind, the base function of the quick button is to let Galaxy Watch Ultra users initiate workouts quickly and smoothly, without having to look at the screen or use touch controls. The button can also be customised to command other functions, like opening a particular app.

Then there’s the display itself. The Galaxy Watch Ultra’s 47mm screen gets up to 3000 nits of brightness. If that number means nothing to you and you haven’t the slightest clue what ‘nits’ are, just know that that’s a good amount; enough for it to be seen even under harsh sunlight. The display is a wonder to look at, with a crystal-clear view at all times. At night, the watch automatically switches to night mode – which, in our opinion, is when it looks most appealing.

Samsung Galaxy Watch Ultra

The features

The Galaxy Watch Ultra is flush with features. For starters, there’s the upgraded, do-it-all sensor on the case back, which Samsung has dubbed the ‘BioActive sensor’. It holds 16 LED lights, which can project ultraviolet rays into the skin to track health metrics. Within the sensor lies an accelerometer, heart rate monitor, blood oxygen monitor, pedometer, barometer and gyroscope, among other things.

With a dual frequency GPS tracker[5], the Galaxy Watch Ultra can guide you during any journey but is especially helpful during workouts. Sometimes you just want to set off and not worry about how you’re getting to where you’re going. With the Galaxy Watch Ultra, you can do exactly that with data-based guidance from Google Maps and turn-by-turn directions that are audibly provided through the watch’s loudspeakers. Once you’ve reached the end of the road, you can easily track back with directions to your starting point at the press of a button.[6]

The Galaxy Watch Ultra’s workout-enhancing capabilities go far beyond navigation. You can track every one of your workouts – whether it’s a walk, run, swim, bike ride, hike, weights session or even a multi-sport endeavour like a triathlon – the Galaxy Watch Ultra will record your data and provide real-time feedback in areas like heart rate zones. This feedback is also tailored to your capabilities. The watch can learn your routine and know what your heart rate should be during certain degrees of effort[7]. If you’re running at what should be a conversational pace but your heart rate is climbing too high, the watch will let you know to ease up[7].

Of course, we can’t forget about the Galaxy Watch Ultra’s incorporation of Galaxy AI. In the health space, Galaxy AI can analyse the key indicators of your overall health condition and provide you with a daily energy score[9]. This assesses a holistic range of factors, including your sleep, heart rate and daily activity. To fine-tune your energy score, you can try optimising your sleep, during which the watch will keep tabs on your rest stages, duration, heart rate and even snoring. I initially scored an 86 and was able to up that to 94 after some good shuteye.

Outside of workouts, Galaxy AI can come in handy when replying to text messages. By analysing previous messages, Galaxy AI can effectively determine your typical tone of conversation with a specific contact and offer reply suggestions that match the mood – and yes, it can do this mid-run, when you need to shoot off a quick text but don’t want to lose your rhythm.[10]

In terms of battery life, the Galaxy Watch Ultra is built for long lasting use, with a 590mAh battery[11]. It should outlast any adventure you take it on, and it’ll be able to handle any environment you take it in too, with an operating temperature ranging from -20-49 degrees Celsius and altitude resistance up to 9000 metres[12].

Lastly, in case you run into trouble, the Galaxy Watch Ultra is equipped with a safety siren that can be triggered by holding the quick button for five seconds. Once activated, a powerful 86 decibel siren will be emitted, which can be heard from up to 180 metres away[13].

The test

Like we said, the Galaxy Watch Ultra is flush with features, but how does it hold up in practice? I had a week with the watch to put it to the test – which I did, comprehensively.

As someone who was recently diagnosed with a heart condition relating to an irregular heartbeat, I was intrigued by the Galaxy Watch Ultra’s ability to perform an ECG[14]. Naturally, that’s the feature I tested first. Within roughly 30 seconds, the Galaxy Watch Ultra was able to detect atrial fibrillation and recommend I see a specialist. I was floored by this, having spent the last few months taking exactly that kind of test, in hospitals. If only I’d tested the Galaxy Watch Ultra sooner.

To help manage my condition, I’ve been ordered by doctors to not let my heart rate get too high while exercising. There, the Galaxy Watch Ultra once again proved useful**. Embarking on a moderate tempo run around my local circuit, I was able to monitor my heart rate through the watch’s BioActive sensor and ease up when I reached too high a zone.

That was run one. On run two I figured I’d test out the Galaxy Watch Ultra’s navigational abilities and was again impressed. I set out rather aimlessly with no clear direction in mind bar a point I wanted to end up. The watch was able to guide me to my destination easily, with timely directions at every turn. Once I arrived at my end point, rather than being completely lost, I was able to use the watch’s ‘track-back’ feature and return home safely[15].

On day three, I shook things up with a bike ride, to see if the watch was just as effective on a different mode of transport to my legs. In short, it was. It was during this session I discovered how handy Galaxy AI can be. Roughly halfway through my ride, a text message popped up on the display. At the time, I was in the zone. You know, that period when you put everything else aside, lock in and feel unstoppable. Rather than pause my workout, pull over and lose momentum, I was able to shoot off a quick – Galaxy AI-suggested – response.[16] With the Galaxy Watch Ultra, you become accustomed to unexpectedly useful features like this.

The verdict

The race to create the world’s leading smart watch is fierce, with new technologies constantly emerging and previously unimagined uses for AI arriving every day. But after testing the Galaxy Watch Ultra, it feels safe to say that Samsung is winning that race.

Yes, the heart-rate monitoring capabilities did appeal to me in particular, but the BioActive sensor is hardly a one trick pony. You’ll be hard-pressed to find someone that doesn’t want greater insight into what makes their body tick so they can optimise their health and enhance their workouts. In that sense, the Galaxy Watch Ultra is truly nonpareil.

The whole design is unquestionably appealing, and, on the wrist, the watch is eminently wearable.

There wasn’t an aspect of the Galaxy Watch Ultra that didn’t impress me, and while I didn’t have the occasion to take it to a mountain’s summit or a desert’s barren vista to test out some of its more hardcore features, it wouldn’t surprise me if it performed just as well.

We’re no astronauts, but we set out to see if HTC VIVE headsets are just as effective in our living room

The post We tried an Extended Reality workout. Here’s why it could change the way you train appeared first on Men's Health Magazine Australia.

]]>
LOADING UP THE HTC VIVE XR Elite’s interface with my headset on and controllers at the ready, I’m transported into what appears to be a bedroom situated high in the clouds. Over my shoulder, I’m startled by a deep, guttural humming noise that sounds like it’s straight out of a National Geographic documentary. I turn to find a whale, weaving its way through the clouds, and around the perimeter of my room. Minutes later I’m landing solid hooks and jabs in a boxing simulator, but to anyone watching, I probably look like I’m performing some sort of elaborate dance routine with no rhythm to it. But I don’t care. This is extended reality.

Every so often a technological advancement comes along that revolutionises the fitness industry. Treadmills, exercise bikes and rowing machines took our workouts indoors, fitness wearables loosened the notepad’s vice-like grip on metric tracking, and when exercise became boring, gamification stepped in to provide a revamp. Now extended reality, the next big development, has arrived.

In case you’re unfamiliar with the concept, extended reality encompasses augmented, virtual and mixed reality. Initially, the concept found its most direct applications in gaming. But more recently, manufacturers have been experimenting with other applications. You’ve likely encountered the Apple Vision Pro at some point, which is essentially an iPhone that can be worn on your face. XR headsets like the Vision Pro have moved beyond their gaming heritage to serve as a productivity tool in the workplace or as a mobile entertainment centre in the home. Now, XR headsets can be used for health and wellness activities, and they’re only just getting started.

“I truly believe that we’re just at the tip of the iceberg when it comes to exploring the potential of extended reality,” HTC VIVE’s Country Manager for Australia and New Zealand, Thomas Dexmier, tells Men’s Health. “In the last few years, headsets have become smaller, lighter, more autonomous, intuitive and inclusive.”

The technology has become so advanced that HTC recently sent a purpose-built headset to the International Space Station (ISS), with the aim of improving astronauts’ physical and mental health. “Astronauts endure extended periods of isolation and extreme confinement with limited contact with their loved ones, which can have a significant impact on their mental health,” Dexmier says. “Additionally, the physical toll of space travel sees astronauts losing up to 40 per cent of muscle and 12 per cent of bone mass during a five-month space mission.”

These were points that HTC sought to remedy. “VR was a natural solution – if you can’t physically change your environment, you can at least visually change it,” Dexmier says. This was no simple challenge, however. VR functions by detecting physical points in our natural environment, so you know which way is up and your lefts from their rights. In space, where there is no gravity, this was harder to achieve. “To solve VR instability in space due to lack of gravity, we anchored the headset’s tracking algorithms to a fixed controller. This ensured a stable orientation so astronauts could interact with content effectively and without the visuals jumping around,” Dexmier said.

HTC VIVE XR Elite

That’s all well and good for the astronauts, but what about the rest of us? Well, thanks to the HTC VIVE XR Elite, you can use XR to revitalise your fitness routine too. The Vive XR Elite is an innovative, lightweight XR headset that can be used on its own, or in tandem with a PC. It’s made for high performance, with a field of view up to 110 degrees, a 90 Hz refresh rate, and a 3840 x 1920 combined resolution. While it can be used for spatial computing or for gaming, we were intrigued by the VIVE XR Elite’s ability to factor into a fitness routine, and were seriously impressed when we tried it out.

Admittedly, this was my first time using XR – beyond a few simple in-store trials and product demonstrations. Because of this, I was faced with an initial period in which every small detail and mundane feature left me astonished – like that whale I mentioned earlier. Look, a floating whale! I exclaimed with wide-eyed bemusement as I tried to reach out for a phantom, typically ocean-going behemoth that simply wasn’t there. But once I became accustomed to the experience, the VIVE XR Elite proved it was much more than a gimmick.

Upon starting up the VIVE XR Elite, you’re welcomed by a bedroom in the clouds which acts as a lobby for the system. It’s here that the aforementioned floating whale makes an appearance, and where you can transition between the VIVE XR Elite’s various features.

VIVEPORT is where you’ll find virtual reality content, games and experiences. These range from action-packed shooters to guided tours of historical landmarks. Somewhere in between there’s a selection of wellness apps, which, after some initial scepticism, I found to be far more effective than expected.

First up was ‘Flow Meditation’, which took me Iceland’s vast, untouched wilderness for a guided meditation retreat. To those questioning why you can’t simply meditate at home rather than in a headset, ask yourself if you’d rather be staring at a pile of unfolded laundry or an Icelandic cliffside while meditating and you’ll have your answer. Next I ventured into apps called ‘Synth Riders’, ‘First Person Tennis’, and ‘POI VR Dance’, which all have their merits, but it was ‘Les Mills Bodycombat’ that I found myself coming back to most often.

Bodycombat offers a dizzying array of mixed-martial arts workouts which are guided by a virtual personal trainer. As I worked up a sweat kicking, punching and ducking my way through a boxing class, I began to realise that working out might never have been this fun, which brings us to one of the biggest selling points for XR workouts, one that seems like a natural progression in the fitness industry given current trends: gamification.

“When it comes to XR, there is a natural opportunity to add gamified elements, and complement existing fitness programs,” Dexmier says. “By infusing elements of gaming, such as challenges, rewards and competition, activities that can easily become routine can feel more engaging, fun and motivating. And with full-body tracking and immersion, it’s surprising how quickly you can lose yourself while exercising and feel motivated to achieve your personal best.”

We’re seeing gamification take hold amongst various FitTech companies like Peloton, Tonal, Whoop and Vitruvian, and even at commercial gyms, but it comes naturally to a device that was designed with entertainment in mind. Although, as Dexmier explains, XR workouts shouldn’t replace your existing exercise routine entirely, but complement it. “We believe that technology is there to complement your life, not replace it. Extended reality provides a great way to mix up how you train, meditate and relax, adding an element of fun and variety no matter where you are,” he says. “When it comes to fitness, gamified training apps make it easy to fit in a session whenever and wherever you like, so if you can’t travel to a gym you can still have a great workout. This convenience can be particularly appealing to those who have busy lifestyles or struggle with motivation.”

It’s important to remember that XR technology really is just getting started. At this stage, it will best serve as a complement to your workout routine, so don’t cancel your gym membership just yet. Although it’s not difficult to envision a future where XR means you’ll never have to leave your home to workout again.

“As the technology continues to develop, we can expect even more sophisticated types of content and tools tailored to health and wellness,” Dexmier says. “Imagine a future where you can train with a fitness instructor across the globe but feel as if they’re in the same room, or cycle through the French countryside in a virtual rendition of the Tour de France?”

One thing is certain, no matter where XR goes from here, HTC will be leading the way. “We’re excited to continue pushing the boundaries of immersive technology and see what comes next,” Dexmier confirms.

The post We tried the Vitruvian Trainer+. Is it worth the hype? appeared first on Men's Health Magazine Australia.

]]>
IF YOU WANT to stay fit and strong, the traditional avenues dictate that you must decide between a commercial gym membership and investing in a home gym. Both have their flaws, and they certainly aren’t inexpensive. A gym membership will get you all the equipment you need, but you’ll have to put up with crowds and the congestion, noise and smells that come with them. If a home gym is more to your liking, you’ll need to be willing to make several costly purchases, and of course, have the requisite space to house such a sanctuary of sweat. But what if there was a third option?

As someone who has gone down each of these paths and teetered between both for some time without committing to any one plan of action, Vitruvian’s flagship product, the Trainer+, had been on my radar for a while. In essence, the Trainer+ is an all-in-one home gym. It’s a compact, portable platform that can generate resistance up to 200kg. With a variety of attachments, the Trainer+ allows you to perform just about any strength exercise you can do in a commercial or home gym, without all the bulky, space-consuming equipment.

So, how does the trainer plus actually work? It’s more complex than simply setting a weight and lifting it. The Trainer+ uses artificial intelligence to adapt to your needs. Translation: the weight will dynamically shift mid-set. If you’re flying through your set, the Trainer+ will recognise it and add resistance. If you’re struggling through those last few reps, the Trainer+ will lighten the load.

It’s not just the futuristic aspect of the Trainer+ that appeals. AI is all the rage nowadays, and to justify its price tag, the Trainer+ has to do more than simply spark initial curiosity. Thankfully, it does.

Strength training is important to me, but these days I tend to prioritise running and cardio – although, I was a six-days-in-the-gym-per week kind of guy in the past. I’m not bold enough to assume that everyone is the same as me, but the point is, strength training exists in a grey area for me right now. I don’t like the idea of a gym membership siphoning funds from my income every week when I feel like I’m not getting enough value for what I’m spending. Nor am I willing to fork out for a slew of pricey equipment to build a home gym, when it could very easily rot in my garage barely used – or worse, end up on the nature strip if I move houses and don’t have room for it anymore.

The Trainer+ is a refreshing alternative to these options. To see if it could surpass them and live up to the hype, I tested it out for myself. Here’s how it went.

What we like about the Vitruvian Trainer+

The frame:

If your biggest barrier to starting a home gym is finding the space to keep equipment, the Trainer+ is a godsend. The entire machine is only around the size of a treadmill’s track and weighs about 36kg. It has wheels and is ultra-portable, able to be moved with ease and stored in places you wouldn’t dream of stuffing gym equipment into (I usually kept it under my couch).

Despite its advanced capabilities, the Trainer+’s design is surprisingly minimalistic. It requires no installation, simply plug it in and start it up. No assembly and de-assembly are required before and after use, perfect for when you’re trying to squeeze in a quick workout.

The AI:

Back in February, Vitruvian founder Jon Gregory gave me a hint of just how intelligent the Trainer+’s artificial intelligence is. “One of the key features of our AI is its ability to dynamically adjust the weight resistance in real-time. Whether a user needs more challenge or less, our AI responds,” he said. At the time, I had my doubts. AI has proven to be a temperamental beast. For every advancement, there are myriad teething issues that prove we still have a long way to go. The Trainer+ is the exception in this case, not the rule.

The Trainer+ does require some human input. You don’t just pick up the gear and start a set, expecting the platform to automatically adjust. Instead, you set a desired starting weight, and from there the Trainer+ will intuitively do the rest. It’s surprisingly quick – and equally effective. Not only does this ensure you get the most out of every rep, tracking across workouts means the Trainer+ knows what you need to do to make progress in the future. As Jon Gregory previously told me, “You’re always challenged just enough to improve, but not so much that you risk burnout or plateauing.”

The versatility:

Vitruvian advertises the Trainer+ as an all-in-one home gym. That’s a big call, but the machinery more than lives up to it. The Trainer+ is compatible with a wide range of attachments, from basic handles and short bars to ropes and pump handles for rapid movement. In practice, this means you can perform just about any exercise that you would in the gym. When scrolling through the more than 200 potential exercises on the Vitruvian app, I was taken aback by the plethora of available options.

For the most part, the Trainer+ deftly tackles whatever you throw at it, with most exercises feeling almost exactly like they would with free weights or on regular equipment – with the added adaptive AI bonus. There are a few exercises, however, that don’t function quite as well. In particular, the Trainer+ can struggle with some exercises that require heavier weight, but use less sturdy attachments. For example, bench press with the long bar was perfectly fine, but attempting chest press with handles often resulted in shaky cables, as the equipment struggled to handle some extra force. Overall, the Trainer+ still held up to standard for most exercises.

The app interface:

Perhaps the most impressive part of the Trainer+ is the ability of the Vitruvian app to work in tandem with the machine to create a seamless workout experience. The app allows you to design your own workout, or select a premade itinerary that caters to specific focuses. Moreover, the app is as intuitive as the Trainer+ itself, recording workout data and providing performance insights and metrics. Gone are the days when you needed to carry around a notebook at the gym and note down every performance detail.

The verdict

I came into my test of the Vitruvian Trainer+ mostly curious about the capabilities of its AI. Plus, as a Men’s Health writer, when anything is proclaimed the ‘future of fitness’, I’m duty-bound to investigate. Typically, such a claim would be nothing more than naturally exaggerative marketing parlance, but in the case of the Trainer+, it’s hard to disagree.

The Trainer+ stood up to all my rigorous testing, withstanding just about everything I challenged it with and quelling many of my doubts about the ability of AI to be advanced enough to have applications in fitness. Whether you’re a workout hobbyist just trying to stay fit and maintain muscle mass, or an acolyte of iron attempting to crush PBs and chisel out an even buffer physique, the Trainer+ is worth your consideration. As for me, it’s safe to say that my gym membership is in peril.

The post The WHOOP 4.0 is worth the hype. A comprehensive review appeared first on Men's Health Magazine Australia.

]]>
The WHOOP 4.0 has stormed onto the fitness tracker market and has quickly climbed to the top of the fitness wearable ladder as the must-have trendy wrist accessory.

Despite its small size, the WHOOP 4.0 is versatile. It can be worn on your wrist or biceps and manages to blend into almost any workout ‘fit. Once its around your wrist, pull the clasp down to close and secure the band; like a new pair of shoes, it just needs a little testing period before you find the sweet spot, after which you’re locked in.

The design of the WHOOP 4.0 veers from the usual watch-type wearables on the market with its unique lock-in design, though admittedly, the design setup is comfortable. Some of the world’s most prominent athletes, such as LeBron James, Michael Phelps, Virat Kohli and AFL superstars the Daicos brothers, have all been caught sporting the tracker.

So the real question remains: is the WHOOP 4.0 worth the investment? Is it worth giving in to the groovy commercials and sleek marketing? And what kind of athlete does the strap suit best?

Below, we provide a thorough, first-hand (or wrist) evaluation of the WHOOP 4.0 Strap and detail the reasons why we love it.

WHOOP 4.0

What we like about the WHOOP 4.0

1.WHOOP app

The interface is found via the WHOOP App, which you will need to download on your smartphone. The interface features a stack of visual actions that might cause a touch of chaos for those unfamiliar with wearable technology. It’s not until you start clocking your first few workouts and nights of sleep that the interface becomes easier to decipher and once you’ve got it, you never look back.

Displaying graphs with your average heart rate, maximum heart rate, heart rate variability (HRV), and the calories burned throughout your workout, WHOOP also calculates your workout strain – a fancy term for how hard you trained on a particular day. It tracks how rigorous you trained throughout the day and how well you slept. You will also receive a recovery score to decide whether you should hit the gym or hit the snooze button and take a rest day.

The app also allows you to filter through past days and access old data about your body and its performance.

2. Comprehensive activity tracking

The WHOOP 4.0 tracks various activities, including the usual running, cycling and high-Intensity workouts, to more niche activities like snowboarding and jiu-jitsu. For stressed out NRL and AFL fans, there’s even an activity for just sitting on the couch watching your team play. The wide range of possible activity selections lets you tailor your exercise or recreational activities accordingly, which suits almost every type of athlete. After your session, the device will provide a detailed rundown of your workout, such as heart rate zones, calories burned and workout strain.

For example, after my 47-minute high-intensity workout, I had an average heart rate of 143 bpm, a maximum heart rate of 179 bpm, and 567 total calories burned, much more than my 100-calorie ping-pong session the night before.

I was also given a rundown of exactly which zones each minute of my workout fell into regarding my heart rate. From a restorative zone of less than 50 per cent to my blistering 1 minute in zone 5 (90 – 100 per cent). This rundown is a cracking analysis for any athlete wanting to know when exactly their body exerts the most energy.

3. Sleep tracking

Sleep tracking was by far the device’s most in-depth and impressive aspect. The WHOOP 4.0 tracks every second of your total and restorative sleep (the body’s regenerative sleep stage) by pin-pointing how much light, deep, and REM sleep you manage to cram into a night. Sleep tracking is simple: without touching anything, fall asleep and let the magic begin. Your WHOOP will pick up every little detail and give you a play-by-play report once you wake up.

The app suggests how much sleep you require to either “get by”, “perform”, or “peak”. Each category directly correlates to how well you recovered from the day before and how ready you are to take on the upcoming 24 hours.

I must admit, I’ve become quite the sleep score enthusiast. Waking up, I feel like a kid on Christmas morning, eager to check if I’ve beaten my previous night’s score, because who doesn’t love some healthy competition with themselves. As you can see, the interface is also user friendly for those tired morning eyes, showing you all the relevant figures and stats as soon as you wake.

4. Battery life

One of the big takeaways from the WHOOP 4.0 band is the fact that they aren’t kidding about it never having to leave your wrist. While with some trackers, taking the wearable off to charge can become a nuisance, only for them to last a day or two before needing to be re-charged, the WHOOP 4.0 cranks out four to five days of battery life when fully charged. A further bonus is that you only need to charge a small battery pack separately. When you need to charge the band itself, simply connect the battery pack to the WHOOP sensor and the band will begin charging; all while you’re still on the move. It’s as easy as that.

5. Artificial intelligence coach

A helpful feature of this device is the built-in WHOOP AI coach. It allows you to ask fitness-related questions, such as how to reduce your stress levels, improve your sleep performance, enhance your morning routine, or determine the optimal strain levels for your day. The AI coach is personalised to your specific needs and provides a rather cool and contemporary variation of fitness support.

6. No Screen

Yes, screen exclusion was initially a concern before using the WHOOP 4.0 strap. However, you can see the thinking behind it: not having a screen eliminates distractions and the possibility of chipped or damaged glass faces, which would be another headache altogether.

To some it might feel odd, but not having the added noise of notifications or a light-up display allows the WHOOP to subtly do its job without you thinking you have a wearable on in the first place.

Who is a WHOOP 4.0 best for?

The WHOOP 4.0 strap is reserved for the wrists of elite athletes. In saying that, however, the wearable would better suit those already established as regular gym goers or basic fitness enthusiasts. Beginners or those in that introductory ‘talking’ stage with fitness and the gym might find the WHOOP 4.0 band overwhelming in its data analysis. In that case you’re better leaving the graphs and numbers alone until you decide what form of exercise suits you best; trust us, wearables and fitness data aren’t going anywhere anytime soon.

The biggest takeaways from the WHOOP 4.0 strap remain its ability to track sleep, how well you’ve recovered from your daily strain and how much strain your body can endure the following day. If you are an athlete who has progressed into caring about specific recovery, sleep, and performance data, this wearable is perfect for you. Those who enjoy playing sports, both competitively and recreationally, and those who also enjoy a sweaty cardio and high-intensity gym session will also find this wearable a perfect fit.

It’s comfortable, subtle, and incredibly easy to forget about, getting all the work done in the background and firing off the data directly to your WHOOP app. It’s unique, thats for sure, from the abnormal design to the amusing name ‘Whoop‘. That being said, it’s these quirky differences and what the device can quietly dissect about your health, that make it easy to see why the WHOOP 4.0 is having such an impact in the world of fitness tech.

Give your beloved pins a well-deserved hug as we deep dive into some of the best compression boots on the market.

The post Step up your recovery game with these compression boots appeared first on Men's Health Magazine Australia.

]]>
IF YOU’RE ALL ABOUT pounding the pavement, hooked on running, cycling, or taking on the field, you know that recovery is the name of the game. After all, you can’t be a star athlete or smash those Strava goals if your legs feel like lead. Sure, you could go the traditional route with nutrition and sleep, but why not shake things up?

We’re talking about the magical world of compression boots. These self-inflating sleeves may look like something out of a Robocop movie, but trust us, they’re the real deal. Compression boots help improve blood flow and reduce inflammation from those tight muscles by applying pressure to different points on your legs and feet. Your worst enemy when training will be tight legs, and it doesn’t take an expert to tell you that running on aching calves or a sore hammy, as unbearable as it might be, could only cause further injury.

How do compression boots work?

Welcome to optimal tissue health through sequential compression. Sounds pretty fancy, but these boots enhance blood circulation, delivering much-needed oxygen and nutrients to your muscles, promoting cellular repair, and reducing inflammation.

Compression boots are fabric boots that cover feet, lower legs, and thighs and contain multiple chambers. Each sleeve fills with air to compress one section of the lower body at a time, starting at the feet and working up towards the hip. This process is called intermittent pneumatic compression (IPC). Medical professionals use it to reduce leg swelling in patients with severe health conditions. Compression boots help push deoxygenated blood from the lower body back towards the heart.

It’s like having a personal masseuse without any awkward small talk. And the best part? All you have to do is sit back, relax, and let the boots work their magic. That’s right; there is no need to lift a finger. So, let’s jump in and check out some of the best compression boots to get your hands on and get those legs in tip-top shape.
